Inuktitut Root Definition



akuk   ᐊᑯᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /mix or /stir s.t. up
  • with transitive ending:
    • to mix or stir it up
    • ex.: akuktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to mix or stir s.t. (-mik) up
    • ex.: akuksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be mixed or be stirred up
    • ex.: akuktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: akuksijuq
