Inuktitut Root Definition



aqqaq   ᐊᖅᑲᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /take s.t. down out of sight
  • with transitive ending:
    • to take it down out of sight
    • ex.: aqqaqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to take s.t. (-mik) down out of sight
    • ex.: aqqaijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be taken down out of sight
    • ex.: aqqaqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix i1vv: aqqaijuq
