ikit   ᐃᑭᑦ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
(1) to /burn s.t. (2) to /turn s.t. on (a light, a fire)
  • with transitive ending:
    • 1. 1. to burn it
    • 2. 2. to turn it on (a light, a fire)
    • ex.: ikittara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • 1. 1. to burn s.t. (-mik)
    • 2. 2. to turn s.t. (-mik) on (a light, a fire)
    • ex.: ikitsijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • 1. 1. to burn
    • 2. 2. to turn on (a light, a fire)
    • ex.: ikittuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • 1. 1. to be burnt
    • 2. 2. to be turned on (a light, a fire)
    • ex.: ikittuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: ikitsijuq
