Inuktitut Root Definition



ikuallaq   ᐃᑯᐊᓪᓚᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /burn s.t. with flame
  • with transitive ending:
    • to burn it with flame
    • ex.: ikuallaqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to burn s.t. (-mik) with flame
    • ex.: ikuallaqsijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to burn with flame
    • ex.: ikuallaqtuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be burnt with flame
    • ex.: ikuallaqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: ikuallaqsijuq
