Inuktitut Root Definition



ila   ᐃᓚ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /mix s.t. with something
  • with transitive ending:
    • to mix it with something
    • ex.: ilajara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to mix s.t. (-mik) with something
    • ex.: iljijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to mix itself with something
    • ex.: ilajuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be mixed with something
    • ex.: ilajuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix ji1vv: iljijuq
