Inuktitut Root Definition



iqik   ᐃᕿᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /circle s.t. with arms or hands
  • with transitive ending:
    • to circle it with arms or hands
    • ex.: iqiktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to circle s.t. (-mik) with arms or hands
    • ex.: iqiksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be circled with arms or hands
    • ex.: iqiktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: iqiksijuq
