Inuktitut Root Definition



kalaq   ᑲᓚᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /draw on s.o.'s stomach
  • with transitive ending:
    • to draw on him/her 's stomach
    • ex.: kalaqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to draw on s.o. (-mik) 's stomach
    • ex.: kalaqsijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to draw on oneself 's stomach
    • ex.: kalaqtuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be drawn on 's stomach
    • ex.: kalaqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: kalaqsijuq
