Inuktitut Root Definition



kasak   ᑲᓴᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /hit s.t. (a target), speaking of a marksman
  • with transitive ending:
    • to hit it (a target), speaking of a marksman
    • ex.: kasaktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to hit s.t. (-mik) (a target), speaking of a marksman
    • ex.: kasaksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be hit (a target), speaking of a marksman
    • ex.: kasaktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: kasaksijuq
