Inuktitut Root Definition



kiliq   ᑭᓕᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /cut or /gash s.o.
  • with transitive ending:
    • to cut or gash him/her
    • ex.: kiliqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to cut or gash s.o. (-mik)
    • ex.: kiliqsijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to cut or gash oneself
    • ex.: kiliqtuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be cut or be gashed
    • ex.: kiliqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: kiliqsijuq
