Inuktitut Root Definition

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /cut or /sever s.t.
  • with transitive ending:
    • to cut or sever it
    • ex.: kipijara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to cut or sever s.t. (-mik)
    • ex.: kipisijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to cut or sever itself
    • ex.: kipijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be cut or be severred
    • ex.: kipijuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: kipisijuq
