Inuktitut Root Definition

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /lift s.t. up
  • with transitive ending:
    • to lift it up
    • ex.: kiviktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to lift s.t. (-mik) up
    • ex.: kiviijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be lifted up
    • ex.: kiviktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix i1vv: kiviijuq
