Inuktitut Root Definition



kumik   ᑯᒥᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /scratch s.o. (to relieve itch)
  • with transitive ending:
    • to scratch him/her (to relieve itch)
    • ex.: kumiktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to scratch s.o. (-mik) (to relieve itch)
    • ex.: kumiksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to scratch oneself (to relieve itch)
    • ex.: kumiktuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be scratched (to relieve itch)
    • ex.: kumiktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by one of the antipassive suffixes si1vv i1vv: kumiksijuq kumiijuq
