Inuktitut Root Definition

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /rip or /take s.t. apart (the seam of a boot) [R]to come undone, speaking of a seam
  • with transitive ending:
    • to rip or take it apart (the seam of a boot)
    • ex.: makijara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to rip or take s.t. (-mik) apart (the seam of a boot)
    • ex.: makisijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be ripped or be taken apart (the seam of a boot)
    • ex.: makijuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: makisijuq
