Inuktitut Root Definition

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /bite at or to /gnaw s.t. (a hard or frozen thing)
  • with transitive ending:
    • to bite at or to gnaw it (a hard or frozen thing)
    • ex.: mangiktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to bite at or to gnaw s.t. (-mik) (a hard or frozen thing)
    • ex.: mangiksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be bitten at or to be gnawed (a hard or frozen thing)
    • ex.: mangiktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: mangiksijuq
