Inuktitut Root Definition



mumik   ᒧᒥᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /turn or /flip s.t. over
  • with transitive ending:
    • to turn or flip it over
    • ex.: mumiktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to turn or flip s.t. (-mik) over
    • ex.: mumiksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to turn or flip over
    • ex.: mumiktuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be turned or be flipped over
    • ex.: mumiktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by one of the antipassive suffixes si1vv i1vv: mumiksijuq mumiijuq
