niruaq   ᓂᕈᐊᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /choose or /elect s.o.
  • with transitive ending:
    • to choose or elect him/her
    • ex.: niruaqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to choose or elect s.o. (-mik)
    • ex.: niruaqsijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to choose or elect oneself
    • ex.: niruaqtuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be chosen or be elected
    • ex.: niruaqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: niruaqsijuq
