Inuktitut Root Definition



nugluk   ᓄᒡᓗᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /spike or /spear s.t.
  • with transitive ending:
    • to spike or spear it
    • ex.: nugluktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to spike or spear s.t. (-mik)
    • ex.: nugluksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to spike or spear itself
    • ex.: nugluktuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be spiked or be speared
    • ex.: nugluktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: nugluksijuq
