Inuktitut Root Definition



panngaiq   ᐸᙵᐃᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /lock or /fasten s.o. tightly
  • with transitive ending:
    • to lock or fasten him/her tightly
    • ex.: panngaiqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to lock or fasten s.o. (-mik) tightly
    • ex.: panngaiqsijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to lock or fasten oneself tightly
    • ex.: panngaiqtuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be locked or be fastened tightly
    • ex.: panngaiqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: panngaiqsijuq
