Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /stop s.o. from doing something.
  • with transitive ending:
    • to stop him/her from doing something.
    • ex.: pillijara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to stop s.o. (-mik) from doing something.
    • ex.: pillisijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to stop oneself from doing something.
    • ex.: pillijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be stopped from doing something.
    • ex.: pillijuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: pillisijuq
