Inuktitut Root Definition

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /put a weight on top of s.t. such that it is held down
  • with transitive ending:
    • to put a weight on top of it such that it is held down
    • ex.: pirujara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to put a weight on top of s.t. (-mik) such that it is held down
    • ex.: piruijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to put a weight on top of itself such that it is held down
    • ex.: pirujuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be put a weight on top of such that it is held down
    • ex.: pirujuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix i1vv: piruijuq
