Inuktitut Root Definition



pusit   ᐳᓯᑦ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /turn s.t. over
  • with transitive ending:
    • to turn it over
    • ex.: pusittara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to turn s.t. (-mik) over
    • ex.: pusiijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to turn over
    • ex.: pusittuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be turned over
    • ex.: pusittuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by one of the antipassive suffixes i1vv si1vv: pusiijuq pusitsijuq
