Inuktitut Root Definition



qupluq   ᖁᑉᓗᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /crack s.t. lengthwise or along the grain in many places
  • with transitive ending:
    • to crack it lengthwise or along the grain in many places
    • ex.: qupluqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to crack s.t. (-mik) lengthwise or along the grain in many places
    • ex.: qupluijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to crack lengthwise or along the grain in many places
    • ex.: qupluqtuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be cracked lengthwise or along the grain in many places
    • ex.: qupluqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix i1vv: qupluijuq
