Inuktitut Root Definition



sanniq   ᓴᓐᓂᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /turn s.o. or s.t. on the side
  • with transitive ending:
    • to turn him/her or it on the side
    • ex.: sanniqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to turn s.o. or s.t. (-mik) on the side
    • ex.: sanniijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to turn on the side
    • ex.: sanniqtuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be turned on the side
    • ex.: sanniqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix i1vv: sanniijuq
