Inuktitut Root Definition

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /call s.o. or /refer to s.o. by such a name
  • with transitive ending:
    • to call him/her or refer to s.o. by such a name
    • ex.: taijara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to call s.o. (-mik) or refer to s.o. by such a name
    • ex.: taisijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to call oneself or refer to s.o. by such a name
    • ex.: taijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be called or be referred to s.o. by such a name
    • ex.: taijuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: taisijuq
