Inuktitut Root Definition



talik   ᑕᓕᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /hide or /mask s.t. from view
  • with transitive ending:
    • to hide or mask it from view
    • ex.: taliktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to hide or mask s.t. (-mik) from view
    • ex.: taliksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to hide or mask itself from view
    • ex.: taliktuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be hidden or be masked from view
    • ex.: taliktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: taliksijuq
