Inuktitut Root Definition



talu   ᑕᓗ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /hide or /block s.o. off from view
  • with transitive ending:
    • to hide or block him/her off from view
    • ex.: talujara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to hide or block s.o. (-mik) off from view
    • ex.: taluijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to hide or block oneself off from view
    • ex.: talujuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be hidden or be blocked off from view
    • ex.: talujuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix i1vv: taluijuq
