Inuktitut Root Definition

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[T]to put his outer belt or sash to s.o. [P]to be put on one's outer belt or sash by s.o. [R]to put on one's own outer belt or sash
  • with transitive ending:
    • to put his outer belt or sash to him/her
    • ex.: tapsijara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to put his outer belt or sash to s.o. (-mik)
    • ex.: tapsiijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be put on one's outer belt or sash by
    • ex.: tapsijuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix i1vv: tapsiijuq
