Inuktitut Root Definition



tapsik   ᑕᑉᓯᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /touch s.t. or /grope at s.t. in the dark
  • with transitive ending:
    • to touch it or grope at s.t. in the dark
    • ex.: tapsiktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to touch s.t. (-mik) or grope at s.t. in the dark
    • ex.: tapsiksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be touched or be groped at s.t. in the dark
    • ex.: tapsiktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by one of the antipassive suffixes si1vv i1vv: tapsiksijuq tapsiijuq
