Inuktitut Root Definition



tigluk   ᑎᒡᓗᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
to /hit or /punch s.t. or s.o. with a clenched fist
  • with transitive ending:
    • to hit or punch it or him/her with a clenched fist
    • ex.: tigluktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to hit or punch s.t. or s.o. (-mik) with a clenched fist
    • ex.: tigluksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the reflexive mode:
    • to hit or punch itself or oneself with a clenched fist
    • ex.: tigluktuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be hit or be punched with a clenched fist
    • ex.: tigluktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: tigluksijuq
