Inuktitut Root Definition



tupaq   ᑐᐸᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /awaken s.o. [R]to wake up
  • with transitive ending:
    • to awaken him/her
    • ex.: tupaqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to awaken s.o. (-mik)
    • ex.: tupaqsijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be awakenned
    • ex.: tupaqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: tupaqsijuq
