Inuktitut Root Definition



uluk   ᐅᓗᒃ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /rub, to /work s.t. soft and supple
  • with transitive ending:
    • to rub, to work it soft and supple
    • ex.: uluktara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to rub, to work s.t. (-mik) soft and supple
    • ex.: uluksijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be rubbed, to be worked soft and supple
    • ex.: uluktuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix si1vv: uluksijuq
