Inuktitut Root Definition



uqummiq   ᐅᖁᒻᒥᖅ

Type: transitive verb root

Meaning:
[-R]to /hold s.t. in the mouth
  • with transitive ending:
    • to hold it in the mouth
    • ex.: uqummiqtara
  • with intransitive ending, an antipassive suffix*, and an object:
    • to hold s.t. (-mik) in the mouth
    • ex.: uqummiijuq
  • with intransitive ending, no antipassive suffix, in the passive mode:
    • to be held in the mouth
    • ex.: uqummiqtuq

*Antipassive suffix

  • when used with intransitive suffixes or verb endings and an object, in order for the verb NOT to be interpreted passively or reflexively, this verb root must be followed by the antipassive suffix i1vv: uqummiijuq
